It was reported that the Spain-based stainless steelmaker Acerinox and Luxembourg-based stainless steelmaker Aperam started preliminary talks over a possible merger of their businesses, which could create a global stainless steel giant.

Analysts estimated that this merger could create a European player with a capacity of 2.3 million tons per year, surpassing the current leader, Finland's Outokumpu, which has a capacity of 1.4 million tons per year. It would also become the leader in its sector in the US, South America, and South Africa.

However, the deal could face potential regulatory hurdles from European antitrust authorities, according to analysts.
