Roy Harvey, CEO of Alcoa, reiterated on Tuesday that the company had no plans to build or restart aluminum smelters to raise capacity, despite tight global supplies of aluminum.

Alcoa said it will only use Elysis’ technology for the construction of low-emission plants, adding that the company will not invest in traditional technology, no matter for the expansion or new capacity.

Elysis, a joint venture between Alcoa and Rio Tinto, has developed technology to manufacture aluminum through production methods without emitting carbon dioxide.

Alcoa said the Elysis project will enter commercial-scale production in a few years. The company promised last November that it will develop any of its new production capacity by using this technology.
