Alcoa Corp., a leading aluminum producer in the US, announced that it has signed a long-term renewable energy supply contract with Greenalia, an independent renewable energy producer, for its San Ciprián smelter in Spain, which was planned to restart in 2024. The agreement will valid from 2024 to the end of 2033.

According to the agreement, Greenalia will provide the smelter with up to 183 megawatts of baseload power, approximately 45% of the energy required by the smelter to operate at full capacity of 228,000 tons per year.

Alcoa is currently looking for solutions for the remaining 55% of the smelter’s power demand.

Although the San Ciprián smelter was shut down, the casthouse and alumina refinery remained normally operational.
