It was reported that Alcoa started its layoff plan at its Intalco aluminum smelter in Ferndale ahead of schedule. Therefore, around 700 employees at the Intalco smelter might be cut unless the smelter was sold to an outside buyer.

Glenn Farmer, a local business representative, said that Alcoa lay off workers earlier than planned. There were around 65 workers laid off by last Friday, and a total of 400 workers to be cut before June 21st.

A total of 350 workers were told to the union to be laid off at last. The firm expected to keep 25-30 workers by August and cut the scale to 14 within one year.
