Alcoa Corp., a leading aluminum producer in the US, said yesterday (April 13) that the Alumar smelter in São Luís, Brazil has been energized its 20 smelting pots, and the aluminum capacity of this smelter will be restarted.

The Alumar smelter has three smelting lines with 710 pots. With the restart of Alumar, Alcoa’s capacity operating rate will reach 80%. It was expected that Alumar will be operational at a full capacity of 447,000 tons per year by the end of this year.

John Slaven, Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer of Alcoa, said that the relaunch of Alumar will strengthen Alcoa's competitive advantage globally and in local markets, as well as expand the company’s supply ability to meet the growing demand for aluminum.
