Alcoa Corp., a leading aluminum producer in the US, announced yesterday (August 30) that it will cut production by one-third at its Lista smelter in Norway in order to mitigate the impact of high energy costs at this site.

There are three potlines at the Lista smelter, with an annual nameplate capacity of 94,000 tons. The production cut of 31,000 tons in one potline will begin immediately, which was scheduled to complete within 14 days.

Alcoa said that the Lista smelter is using spot energy pricing, and the cost has hiked to more than US$600 per megawatt hour.
