European Aluminium, an industry association representing the aluminum industry in Europe, called for an exclusion of aluminum from the carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) as the association believed that carbon tariffs would let the European aluminum industry struggle in a competitive environment without advantage and would be helpless for climate change.

The European Commission will announce the CBAM proposal today (July 14) and the legislation was expected to be completed by 2022. The transitional period will start from 2023 and be implemented from 2026.

The CBAM targeted the power industry and energy-intensive industrial sectors, including iron and steel, aluminum, cement, fertilizers, and so on. The EU aimed to reduce 55% from 1990 levels of its carbon emissions by 2030.
