The Aluminum Association, based in Arlington, Virginia, has released a policy document titled "Aluminum for America: A Presidential Policy Brief" outlining strategic priorities for the incoming Trump administration and Congress. A key focus is increasing aluminum recycling to secure domestic metal supply and reduce environmental impact.
The association highlighted that US$1 billion worth of aluminum beverage cans end up in landfills annually. It advocates for improving collection infrastructure and supporting policies like deposit-return and extended producer responsibility (EPR) programs to boost recycling rates.
Using recycled aluminum saves 95% of the energy required to produce new aluminum, with recycled metal already comprising over 80% of US production. The organization calls for targeted trade enforcement to counter unfair practices by Chinese firms, which have disrupted global markets with US$60 billion in subsidies. President and CEO Charles Johnson emphasizes the industry's economic impact, generating US$228 billion and supporting 700,000 jobs annually.
