ArcelorMittal, the global leading steelmaker, has announced it will not proceed with its planned direct-reduced iron (DRI) and electric arc furnace (EAF) decarbonization projects in Bremen and Eisenhüttenstadt, Germany. The company cited an unfavorable policy and market environment as the reason for halting these projects, which aimed to produce lower-emission steel.

ArcelorMittal had previously indicated difficulties in making final investment decisions due to the challenging energy and policy environment. The company is now undertaking repair work on Blast Furnace 5A at its Eisenhüttenstadt plant, with a 2.5 million ton per year capacity, until June 28.

ArcelorMittal is urging the EU to expedite the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), improve trade protections, and implement the EU Metals Action Plan to enhance the competitiveness of low-emissions steel.
