Australia’s aluminum extrusion manufacturer Capral has announced a successful trial of recycled-content billets supplied by Rio Tinto at its Boyne Smelter in Australia. The billets were made from melting down 50 to 100 tons of post-production aluminum scrap from the Capral plant and contained at least 20% recycled content.

Capral said it is exploring incorporating this sustainable material into its product lines to reduce waste and lower its carbon footprint. The company pointed out that currently most scrap materials need to be shipped overseas for processing, and the final product is very different from its normally produced products.

The introduction of aluminum with 20% recycled content is in line with the company’s ongoing low-carbon aluminum product strategy and aims to provide a more sustainable option for the Australian market, added Capral.

The trial confirms that mixed recycling and raw materials can meet the quality standards of the construction and transport industries, demonstrating the potential of closed-loop recycling.
