Chile’s President, Gabriel Boric, reorganized his cabinet last Wednesday and appointed Aurora Williams as the new mining minister to promote the growth of Chilean mining revenue. The new mining minister's highest priority is to consolidate Chile's national lithium policy and maintain the country's position as a world leader in the mining industry.

Chile's government announced a plan in April this year, aiming at strengthening control over the country's massive lithium reserves, which is seen as a key factor in Chile's transition from fossil fuels.

Currently, negotiations with private lithium miners are led by Codelco, a Chile state-owned company. Codelco's copper production has been declining for several months. It was warned that due to weather and operational issues, production in 2023 will be lower than expected.
