In recent years, due to the abundance of hydroelectric power in China’s Yunnan province, many Chinese aluminum manufacturers have moved their plants to this province.

This year, Yunnan experienced less rainfall than the norm, which caused the unsteadiness of its hydroelectric power. Under this situation, the local government requested primary aluminum producers to reduce their production capacity by up to 20%.

Previously, China Hongqiao Group, one of the largest aluminum producers in the world, planned to move over 60% of its capacity to Yunnan province by the end of 2025.

Hongqiao regards the power disruptions in Yunnan province this year as a short-term issue, so they will continue their plan to move their aluminum smelting capacity to Yunnan province. Hongqiao believes that Yunnan will develop wind, solar, and energy storage.
