Cleveland-Cliffs’ steel replaces aluminum in auto stamping

Cleveland-Cliffs Inc., a flat-rolled steel producer in the US, announced a successful production trial with a major automotive OEM, demonstrating that its exposed steel parts can be stamped without defects using the OEM's existing aluminum-forming equipment. This breakthrough allows the replacement of aluminum with Cliffs' steel in critical automotive applications, removing the need for costly retooling.

The achievement, driven by Cliffs’ technical teams, enables a seamless switch, particularly timely given recent disruptions in the aluminum supply chain. Cliffs has transitioned from trial to routine production and is now filling regular orders. Other clients are already inquiring about programs to substitute aluminum with Cliffs' steel, confirming growing confidence in domestic steel supply.
