In November, Constellium SE, a France-based rolled aluminum producer, announced a partnership with a German automaker and a recycling company OSR GmbH & Co. KG to use laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) technology to classify mixed aluminum production scrap.

Traditionally, mixed 5000 and 6000 series aluminum scrap is downcycled, but OSR's LIBS technology can quickly sort by alloy series with a purity of 95%, allowing the material to be efficiently reused to produce high-quality, high-scrap content aluminum products, demonstrating LIBS technology’s potential in global aluminum recycling.

Constellium said the collaboration begins in September 2022, with scrap deliveries starting in April 2023. The automaker sends scrap to OSR where it is sorted for melting by Constellium at its Neuf-Brisach plant in France.

Metallurgist engineer at Constellium Fanny Mas noted that the company continues to conduct research and development on post-consumer scrap, evaluating LIBS and other technologies. She expected the technology to become more cost-effective as the amount of aluminum used in vehicles increases.
