On November 20, Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA), known to be the world’s largest premium aluminium producer, announced that in cast metal production, since 1979 to date, it has reached 50 million tonnes.

After the export of oil and gas, EGA’s aluminium is deemed to be the largest made-in-the-UAE export, shipping to more than 50 countries. EGA produces one in every 25 tonnes of aluminium produced globally.

Its journey can be traced back to 1979, when the firm began production as a small regional smelter located in Jebel Ali, where the annual production capacity was recorded at 135 thousand tonnes per year. Since then, the firm has expanded eight separate times. In order to produce the first 10 million tonnes of cast metals, the firm took nearly 30 years.

In 2009, the production at EGA’s Al Taweelah smelter began and secured the place as the largest in the world when it was built. In 2024, the firm sold a total of 2.74 million tonnes of cast metal.

In modern life, aluminium has emerged as an essential material and billions of people globally have been making use of the metal produced by the firm everyday, from the skyscrapers to smartphones. The infinite recycling features enable the thought that the metal produced by the company would be used by the generations to come.

Currently, EGA is focused on building the UAE’s largest aluminium recycling plant, which would have a total capacity of 170 thousand tonnes per year, with the production expected to begin in the first quarter of 2026.

Besides this, the firm is planning to begin the first new primary aluminium production facility in the US since 1980. The planned plant in Oklahoma aims to nearly double the primary aluminium output. With this plant, the firm is expecting that by the end of the decade, it will reach the first hot metal.
