The EU has added aluminum to its list of essential minerals and increased recycling and processing goals for over two dozen raw materials. The decision aimed to reach green transition goals and was also part of its Critical Raw Materials Act.

Earlier, the EU proposed at least 10% of 16 strategic raw materials could be provided from domestic regions by the end of the decade. Apart from that, the EU planned to increase its recycling goal to 15% and the processing of raw materials up to 40% in the domestic regions. The ultimate goal for the EU is to import that strategic material from non-EU countries less than 65%.
