Eurometaux, a European non-ferrous metals association, warned that Europe's zinc and aluminum smelting capacity has decreased by nearly 50% over the past year due to the tight supply caused by the Russian-Ukrainian war. If the gas is in short supply and electricity prices soar in winter, the EU industry will face risks of more permanent closure of facilities and plants.

The association also said that any further decline in European metal production could result in massive job losses, especially for aluminum smelters.
