Canada-based Geomega Resources Inc. has received funding to build a C$4 million alumina waste processing plant in Quebec. The funding includes C$1.5 million from Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC), C$1.2 million from Geomega partner Rio Tinto in the financing, C$300,000 from Quebec's Ministry of Economy and Innovation via Investissement Quebec, as well as C$450,000 from a third-party organization in the later phases of the project.
Leah Lawrence, president and CEO of SDTC, said that the plant will be developed by Geomega subsidiary Innord Inc., and it will reduce the volume of red mud by 70% to 90% by using bauxite residue generated from aluminum production and will recover minerals from this waste.
Rio Tinto's Director of By-product Valorisation Stephane Poirier said that the technology was aimed to find new uses for bauxite residue.
