Gerdau, the largest producer of long steel in the Americas, indicated that it will suspend its production of the plant in Whitby, Ontario, from late April. The plant mainly produces long products, such as angles, channels, flats, reinforcing bars (rebar), and structural products.

During the outage, the company will increase the electric arc furnace (EAF) mill's production capacity and quality. Gerdau indicated that other Gerdau mills will cover the loss from Whitby's plant.
