Speira, a leading aluminum company in Germany, was forced to cut production by 50% at its Rheinwerk aluminum smelter due to high energy prices in October last year, and recently said that it will close the remaining 70,000 tons of liquid aluminum production at this smelter in the second half of 2023 due to the same reason.

The company said that the Rheinwerk smelter will be transformed into an aluminum rolling and recycling company and EUR 30 million will be invested to improve the plant’s recycling capacity.

The energy crisis in Western Europe began in 2021 and even got worse after the Russia-Ukraine war last year. Now it has left its peak, but the energy-intensive aluminum industry is still being affected.
