An investment of USD 6 billion for establishing a high-tech innovative hub to be located in Saemangeum, Gunsan, will be made by Hyundai Motor Group. This investment targets establishing a high-tech innovative hub with hydrogen production, renewable energy and artificial intelligence. From completion to commencement of the operations, the project will be backed by the South Korean government and Jeonbuk Province.
The hub will hold a 200 MW PEM electrolyser plant, making use of the local renewable energy sources to produce clean hydrogen. It further aims to provide hydrogen for buses, trams and various other mobility solutions, laying the groundwork for a fully integrated hydrogen ecosystem. This shall include storage, distribution and refuelling infrastructure. Additionally, the firm is underway with plans to boost electrolyser capacity across the country to reach 1 GW.

Moreover, the firm will also, by 2053, develop a gigawatt-scale solar energy portfolio, which will be built on the existing 99 MW solar facility for powering the complex sustainably.

AI data centres and other energy-intensive operations will receive the advantage of the solar infrastructure whilst enhancing the firm's carbon neutrality goals. These AI technologies will be applied in areas like robotics, smart city systems and energy management by integrating clean energy and mobility solutions.

The construction of the AI data centre and solar power infrastructure is expected to commence in 2027 and will be completed by 2029. The PEM electrolyser plant construction will begin in 2027 and aims to start operations in 2029, followed by a gradual increase in capacity. Additionally, the robotics cluster is slated to begin construction in 2028 and is anticipated to wrap up by 2029.

The firm announced abouts its talks with the funding partners, such as the Korea Development Bank, for arranging the finances for the project.
