CIL mainly reduced its coal supply of captive power plants (CPP). Previously, these captive power plants in the aluminum industry had signed fuel supply agreements with CIL as well as its subsidiaries to ensure long-term coal supplies.

According to the Aluminium Association of India, the recent Indian aluminum industry has fallen into a situation of standstill, which was caused by the sudden decline of coal supply from Coal India Limited (CIL).

Any power outage (two hours or more) will give rise to the solidification of the molten aluminum in tanks, which will lead to at least six months shutdown of aluminum plants.
