Indonesia launched a US$941 million smelter-grade alumina refinery in the province of West Kalimantan. President Joko Widodo inaugurated the launch on Tuesday (September 24).

The alumina refinery will be operated by the state-owned mining company PT Aneka Tambang (Antam) and the state-owned aluminum company PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (Inalum).

With an annual production capacity of 1 million metric tons of alumina, the refinery needs 3.3 million tons of bauxite as input.

Indonesia is rich in natural resources. The country focuses on developing its domestic mineral processing industry instead of exporting raw materials.

President Joko Widodo said that Indonesia has an aluminum demand of 1.2 million tons, 56% of which is sourced from other countries. After Indonesia completes all related facilities for the processing industry and well uses its existing raw materials, it can stop importing.
