Indonesia is strengthening its steel industry by focusing on stainless steel production for the oil and gas (O&G) sector, intending to reduce imports and leverage the nation's rich nickel reserves, making Indonesia a global leader in this specialized market.

New initiatives include PT CT Advance Technology's launch of Indonesia’s first anti-corrosion stainless steel plant, an IDR 100 billion investment in partnership with Spain’s Tubacex Group, with an expected annual production of 10,000 tons of offshore-grade stainless steel.

Besides, PT Artas Energi Petrogas opened Southeast Asia's largest seamless pipe plant in cooperation with Inerco Global International, with an IDR 2.5 trillion investment and a 250,000-ton annual capacity, aiming to meet half of Indonesia’s demand and save IDR 15 trillion in import costs.

Government policies, such as nickel downstreaming and steel import controls, further support domestic production, aiming for greater self-reliance in the O&G sector.
