Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) reported on May 23 that Japanese auto parts makers are seeing lower sales orders, mainly due to the 25% US tariff on auto imports. A METI survey of 3,100 companies shows growing concerns about sales and business conditions.

Some manufacturers expect order declines of up to 20%, with delivery delays and near break-even operations reported. One US subsidiary is absorbing the tariff costs, raising worries about future challenges.

Negotiations between Tokyo and Washington continue, and despite tariffs, Japan’s passenger car exports to the US rose by 12% year on year in April 2025 to 124,428 units.
