US Aluminum Association, Mexico’s Instituto Mexicano del Aluminio, and the Aluminium Association of Canada called for the continuation of zero-tariff trade, strengthening import monitoring, and stronger trade enforcement in a letter sent to trade officials in the US, Mexico, and Canada.

They asked for several actions before a mandatory review of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) in 2026. Among their appeals, the continued tariff-free trade of aluminum in North America is critical to their industries as the integrated market will make the countries focus on their respective competitive advantages and also benefit from the advantages of aluminum companies in the other countries.

They also required the Mexican government to promptly enhance its aluminum import monitoring programs, like what the US and Canada have done. Besides, North American aluminum industries must continue to enforce global trade laws to fight unfair and illegal aluminum trade which has posed challenges to the global industry in recent years.

Moreover, giving more government support to the decarbonization for aluminum sustainability development is also essential. Aluminum is critical to green energy transition in several sectors.
