Novelis broke ground on a new US$50 million aluminum recycling center in Ulsan, South Korea. The center has an annual casting capacity of 100 tons of low-carbon aluminum ingots, and it was expected to reduce Novelis’ carbon emissions by more than 420,000 tons per year.

The recycling center was scheduled to start production in 2024. It will increase Novelis' recycling capacity by more than 20% to 440,000 tons per year in South Korea, as well as improve its ability to process different types of aluminum scrap.

Novelis said using recycled aluminum as a raw material reduces 95% of the energy required to produce primary aluminum from bauxite, which means that 95% of carbon emissions can be reduced.
