Charlotte, North Carolina-based steel maker Nucor Corporation has highlighted the importance of cleaner and greener steel for the industry.

The view was expressed by Leon Topalian, President and CEO during the recently held ‘Steel Success Strategies’ online summit organized by Fastmarkets Metal Bulletin in partnership with World Steel Dynamics. Despite the current challenging times for the industry, the global steel industry offers huge opportunities in future.

According to him, companies like Nucor have been involved in efforts to optimize their operations to benefit from the future success of the industry. The company plans nine projects worth more than $4 million in expanding its capabilities. These enhancements will help the company to expand its range of value-added products for the automotive market, by improving the performance of its businesses, Topalian said.

The company is investing $1.7 billion in a new steel plate manufacturing plant in Brandenburg in the Buttermilk Falls Industrial Park along the Ohio River. The plant will have a production capacity of approximately 1.2 million tons of steel plates per annum. It must be noted that the company had recently completed first phase of its expansion project at Gallatin mill in Ghent, Kentucky.
