According to the Odisha Sponge Iron Manufacturers' Association (OSIMA), sponge iron plants, mainly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in eastern Odisha, are asking the state government to intervene in iron ore shortages and soaring prices which might threaten their operations.

The OSIMA has sought immediate measures to solve the problems of artificial shortage caused by many diversions of iron ores to other states and the manipulation of prices by commercial miners.

The association said that the sponge iron plants and downstream mills such as induction furnaces and rolling mills have to take urgent measures to help SMEs.
