As the world's largest aluminum producer, several regions in China have restricted the aluminum output at smelters and the power consumption since this year, leading to a sharp reduction in domestic aluminum supply, and the demand for aluminum imports remained high.
According to statistics from the General Administration of Customs of China, China's imports of unforged aluminum and aluminum products, including primary aluminum and unforged aluminum alloy, amounted to around 247,500 tons, dropping by 20.7% compared to the previous month and also going down by 42.4% from the same month a year ago. The figure hit the lowest level since May.
In August, China imported 8.7 million tons of bauxite, a month-on-month decrease of nearly 6% and a year-on-year reduction of 15.1%.
Guinea, China’s largest bauxite supplier, had a coup in early September, but it was understood that there was no immediate impact on operations at major bauxite mines.
