Anglo-Australian mining giant Rio Tinto has released a request for proposal (RFP) for wind and solar power resources for its three aluminum projects in Gladstone Queensland.

A total of 1,140 MW of reliable power or at least 4,000 MW of wind or solar power resources will be needed for the Boyne smelter, the Yarwun alumina refinery, and the Queensland alumina refinery.

Last October, Rio Tinto promised to increase the usage of renewable energy and said it will focus its decarbonization on the aluminum business, which accounts for roughly 70% of Rio Tinto's direct and indirect emissions. Rio Tinto remained its commitment to reaching net zero by 2050.
