Alro Group, one of the main aluminum companies in Romania, said the country’s only alumina refinery, Alum, based in Tulcea, planned to temporarily suspend production for an estimated period of 17 months from August 1 this year due to high costs and short supply of energy.

Gheorghe Dobra, CEO of Alro and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Alum, said that the rapidly increasing prices of electricity and natural gas have brought a negative impact on the production costs of calcined alumina and electrolytic aluminum. The cost of natural gas per ton of alumina is significantly higher than the actual price of one ton of alumina imports and delivery to Alro.
