SMS Group, on January 21, celebrated the grand opening of its new manufacturing facility, directly reflecting its international expansion strategy. By introducing this state-of-the-art technology, the firm is not only highlighting its growth but is also addressing the increasing demand in one of the world’s most vibrant steel markets.

The new site, with 160 employees and nearly 400 contracts on board, forms another pillar of the SMS Group’s global manufacturing operations located in Sanand near Ahmedabad. The site will be manufacturing machines and equipment, which will aid in processing flat and long products alongside the forging technology.

Nearly 250 guests, from both the political and business sectors, attended the event, which was officially opened with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting and the lighting of a traditional Indian lamp, performed by members of SMS’s German leadership team along with local leaders.

By launching this new production plant, the firm is reinforcing its dedication to actively supporting India’s economy and providing top-notch solutions to its customers. The manufacturing site, which is the firm’s second production facility located in India, is complicated with a manufacturing plant located in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, covers 80 thousand square meters.

With the new facility located in Sanand, near Ahmedabad, the firm is now strengthening the customer focus in the growing market and has been contributing to the "Make in India" 2014 program, aiming to position the country as the centre leading for global manufacturing.

Fabíola Fernandez, CFO, Member of the Executive Board, SMS group, stated, "This investment strengthens our production base in India for plants and machinery and makes us a first-class supplier. It is an important step toward expanding our presence in this significant growth market and actively supporting the industrial upswing in the country. Steel production in India currently stands at around 150 million tons per year and is expected to rise to 300 million tons in the coming years. At SMS group, we want to provide our local customers with the best possible support in the form of first-class equipment and outstanding service."
