The Trade Commission of South Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy has recommended a provisional anti-dumping duty of 21.62% on Chinese stainless steel plates. The decision was announced on January 16, and it aimed to counter the adverse effects of low-priced imports on the domestic steel industry, particularly in shipbuilding.

The government's provisional anti-dumping measures can be implemented before the completion of the main investigation, providing immediate relief to the struggling steel sector. The final decision on the anti-dumping investigation is expected by June, following public hearings and on-site inspections.

Stainless steel plates, defined as products with a thickness of 4.75mm or more and a width of 600mm or more, are crucial in shipbuilding. The recommendation reflects the need to address the challenges posed by cheaper Chinese imports, which have undercut domestic manufacturers despite a global shipbuilding boom. The measure is expected to stabilize market dynamics and support local steelmakers.
