India-based Tata Steel is all set to commission its first steel recycling plant in Rohtak in the north Indian state of Haryana. The state-of-the-art plant will have a capacity to process around 500,000 tons per year. The latest press release by the company states that the first raw material consignment of ferrous scrap was flagged off on 24th July, 2020 for trials.

The new initiative is considered as a big step by the company towards sustainable steel production. The steel recycling route will help steel production by consuming less energy and produces lower carbon emissions. The new facility will enhance availability of quality processed ferrous scrap, thereby lowering the dependency on imports.

The steel recycling plant is being set up in collaboration with Aarti Green Tech Ltd., a subsidiary of Aarti Steels Ltd. It is the first-of-its-kind recycling facility in the entire country to be equipped with a wide range of scrap processing equipment such as shredders, balers, material handlers etc. The scrap procured from various market segments will be processed to high quality scrap, which will be supplied to electric arc furnaces, induction furnaces and foundries, to be used as raw materials for downstream steel making.

Yogesh Bedi, Chief, Steel Recycling Business, Tata Steel, observed that steel recycling through the EAF route is a global trend.
