The US President Trump announced on August 6 to re-impose 10% tariffs on Canadian aluminum imports, alleging that Canadian aluminum products flooded the US market. The re-imposition took into force last Sunday (August 16).

However, Canadian Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland denied that the Canadian aluminum industry threatened US national security. Therefore, she announced on August 7 to take a countermeasure to impose retaliatory tariffs of 3.6 billion Canadian dollars on US aluminum products, which will effective on September 16.
