The US International Trade Commission (USITC) started an investigation to assess the greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) intensity of steel and aluminum products produced in the US. the US Trade Representative (USTR) said the information will be helpful for discussions about the global arrangement on sustainable steel and aluminum.

The USITC will conduct a survey by issuing questionnaires to companies with facilities that can produce steel and aluminum in the US, no matter they are US firms or foreign-owned firms, to collect data on their production of these products and associated GHG emissions.

The types of GHG emissions for intensity estimates in the report include scope 1: direct emissions from the facility’s owned or controlled sources, scope 2: indirect emissions from the generation of the facility’s purchased energy, and certain scope 3: indirect emissions not included in scope 2 that occur in the value chain of the reporting company.

The USITC is scheduled to submit its report no later than January 28, 2025, as requested by the USTR.
