It was reported that Vale finally decided to sell its assets to New Century Resources in Australia. Vale hoped to sell 95% of the shares in the New Caledonia nickel plant.

As part of the sales plan, Vale is closing its recombination refinery, which has also challenged the survival of some business entities and contractors in southern New Caledonia.

In order to sell iron ore, Vale needed to persuade the New Caledonia government to change mining regulations to allow the iron ore to be processed locally. However, some politicians insisted that the mining law remained unchanged, and stated that Vale should send the exporting iron ore to a factory with the right and interest in Northern New Caledonia.
