In Yunnan province, the production of aluminum was mainly powered by hydropower resources. Recently, due to the coming winter, the Yunnan Development and Reform Commission issued a document warning aluminum producers powered by hydropower sources to keep average monthly outputs at August levels for the rest months of the year.

Yunnan province suffered severe drought this May and the government started to impose restrictions on the production of aluminum from that month due to the short supply of hydropower resources.

In winter, the output of hydropower sources will greatly be reduced. This policy is also the result of unfinished energy consumption targets.
