Alcoa of Australia reached an agreement with AGL Energy Limited (AGL) for the power supply to the future operations at the Portland aluminum smelter in Victoria.

The nine-year deal will be effective on July 1, 2026. AGL Energy will supply 287MW of electricity to the Portland smelter, supporting the operations till mid-2035.

Combined with the power supply contract of 300MW inked in 2023, the Portland smelter could operate at 95% of its nameplate capacity of 358,000 tons per year. The smelter is currently running at an average capacity of about 80%.

Interim President of Alcoa of Australia said that the deal provides power for future production needs and will help support local jobs, economic benefits, as well as community support for the region.
