John Foster, the chairman of the American Metals Supply Chain Institute (AMSCI), wrote to US President Biden, requesting the removal of the 232 tariffs on steel and aluminum, so as to lower the domestic cost of related products and driving the employment in the metal supply chain.

According to John Foster, the US government’s policies should meet the demand for a more widely integrated metal supply chain as well as adapting to the development of the international market, instead of protecting minority interests only.

However, the United Steelworkers (USW) and several US steel producers expressed their opposition against AMSCI's proposal.
