ArcelorMittal said it will install a new direct reduced iron facility with an annual production capacity of 2.5 million tons and the electric arc furnace facility with an annual production capacity of 2.4 million tons at the Dofasco’s plant in Hamilton, Ontario.

Those new technology and equipment implementation could reduce Dofasco’s emissions by around 3 million tonnes, about 60% of its total emissions.

The project is an operational decarbonization investment plan to 2028, with an investment of approximately C$1.8 billion.

Plans for the decarbonization project came into effect after ArcelorMittal received a C$500 million investment from the Ontario government.

The Canadian government has previously announced an additional C$400 million investment in the project in 2021.
