The Ferrous Division of the Bureau of International Recycling (BIR) announced publication of the latest edition of “World Steel Recycling in Figures” handbook, which provides most recent update on global ferrous scrap and steelmaking statistics.
According to Ferrous Division President Greg Schnitzer and Statistics Advisor Rolf Willeke, world crude steel output reported notable surge in the previous year. Also, use of steel scrap as a raw material for steelmaking recorded year-on-year increase in 2019. However, global external steel scrap trade witnessed decline during the year, the report said.

The country almost doubled its EAF output over the previous two years.
Turkey continued to remain as the world’s topmost steel scrap importer. However, imports by the country fell by 8.7% from 2018. In second place was India, whose imports recorded 11.4% year-on-year surge in 2019. On exports side, the U.S. and EU region shipped out more scrap quantity during the previous year.
