Brazil’s pellet manufacturer, Samarco, a joint venture between Brazil’s Vale and Australia’s BHP, announced that it planned to reopen its namesake iron ore mine by the end of 2020.

The mine was closed to date after the dam collapse in 2015, which killed 19 people. The accident at that time polluted the surrounding lake and was regarded as the worst environmental disaster in Brazil’s history.

The company planned to spend about 12 months to build a filtration system, which would fully dewater sand tailings and store it safely. After the filter system was ready and shareholders have signed and agreed, the company would resume operations.

Although Samarco did not specify when to resume work, the company stated that it had all the licenses required for resumption of production and would resume production gradually.
