It was reported that Century Aluminum gave out a notice that it might close its Mount Holly aluminum smelter by the end of 2020 unless the smelter can obtain a competitively priced power arrangement to deliver energy to the plant.

The firm’s current electricity contract with Santee Cooper will expire on December 31, 2020.

The Mount Holly aluminum smelter laid off 300 employees in 2015 due to a dispute with Santee Cooper, and it has been operating at 50% of production capacity since then.
