Although China’s domestic high carbon ferrochrome price kept dropping, China’s ferrochrome imports in July hiked to over 300,000 tons.

According to data from China’s Customs, in July, China’s ferrochrome imports totaled about 312,000 tons, largely hiking by 139.6% month on month and growing by 69.7% year on year.

Among them, the imports from South Africa were about 172,000 tons, soaring by 248.55% month on month and rising by 49.4% year on year. The reasons might be as follows. First, after the port capacity resumed from the heavy rainfall in South Africa in the second quarter, the shipment recovered. Second, low ferrochrome demand in Europe made South Africa’s exports to China rise.

Currently, the winter in South Africa is almost finished, the power shortage might ease, and shipping freight continues to decrease. Also, China’s domestic ferrochrome supply is under pressure, and demand is low. Therefore, China’s high carbon ferrochrome price would be still uncertain in the short term.
