According to statistics from China Customs, China imported around 12,400 tons of scrap in the first two months of this year, soaring by 201.7% compared to the figure in the same period a year ago. These scrap imports were under HS codes 720410, 720441, and 720449, excluding stainless steel scrap and alloyed steel scrap.

Among them, the imports were mainly from Japan, totaling roughly 11,000 tons, a year-on-year increase of nearly 267%.

In spite of a year-on-year surge in January-February imports, the average monthly import volume was much lower than that in 2021, due to the different price trends in domestic and international markets.
