China’s steel imports hit 30-year low in 2022

In 2022, China’s steel imports were 10.57 million tons, decreasing by 25.9% year on year, which hit a yearly record low since 1993. The high inflation and energy crisis made China’s steel import cost high.

Among them, Japan, South Korea, and Indonesia were the main import sources, with a total of 7.92 million tons, accounting for 75% of China’s total imports.

In 2022, China's steel exports amounted to 67.32 million tons, increasing by 0.9% year on year.
