European Aluminium, an industry association representing the aluminum industry in Europe, expressed its disappointment about the result of the European Parliament's plenary vote on the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).

The association said that the European Parliament's decision to cover indirect emissions in its proposal will lead to an increase in carbon emissions from global aluminum production. Not only is there no reliable way to calculate indirect carbon costs on imports in the package passed through a vote this time, but there is no realization that the European electricity grid must be closer to decarbonization to benefit from CBAM on indirect emissions.

European Aluminium called for a more cautious approach to phase in indirect emissions.
