Hydro Alunorte accused of bauxite residue spillage polluting river in Brazil

On June 24, 2022, Norwegian aluminum producer Norsk Hydro accused in a Dutch court that the Alunorte alumina refinery had polluted a Brazilian river with its bauxite residue spillage for years, endangering inhabitants’ health.

An association and nine victims representing about 11,000 indigenous families from the northeastern Brazilian river port of Barcarena are suing Hydro, accusing the Alunorte refinery of spillage for at least 20 years.
